Q&A: I have keratoconus. can i go to any optical to have a regular eye exam done?

Question by bettygirl: I have keratoconus. can i go to any optical to have a standard eye exam accomplished?
I have an eye condition referred to as keratoconus and I am due for an eye exam. I am also thinking in acquiring glasses so I was questioning if I can go to any optical to have an eye exam carried out or do I want to go to a specialist to have the eye exam and get a prescription

You can go to see any optician for an eye examination for glasses.

yes you can but it would be very hard for them to give you the right prescription. I know because I have keratoconus and I had it for about 8 years. A specialist would be the best for you because they would have to Monitor your eyes to make sure that your vision isn't constantly changing because with keratoconus your vision can be one way one year and then in the next six months it can change again. A specialist can help you understand more about the condition then a regular optican. First they have to see if glasses can improve your vision if that can't you will be require to wear special contact lens like the Roses K lens they are glass permeable lens, expecally design for patient who have keratoconus. I see a corneal specialist who does all types of test on my eyes. I'm glad that I want to them because before I use to see a regular eye doctor he was very nice, but this is a eye disease and you need Special attention for that so take care of your eyes the right way. Go see a corneal Specialist who would be able to give you the right Information
