Enjoy Comfortable and Clear Eyesight through Contact Lens Wear

Post by Dr. Tracy Giles

As individuals age, it's inevitable to expertise difficulties with eyesight. This certain well being issue is caused by numerous elements such as poor diet plan, not observing the proper way of reading and unhealthy way of life among others.

In the olden days, wearing eyeglasses was the only answer to those who had been experiencing poor eyesight. This, even so, proved to be uncomfortable to some individuals. At times, they could even forget wearing this all the time because of the weight they had to bear on their nose and ears. The others, specifically the younger ones, developed an inferiority complex as they had to bear with the teasing of their pals who would refer to them as having "four eyes."

Fortunately with advanced technology, the contact lens was invented prompting several of those who wear the eyeglasses to heave a excellent sigh of relief. Indeed for those who don't like the standard eyesight correction tool, the contact lenses wear is the ideal solution. It is not only lightweight and not simply visible to other individuals, it also makes it possible for the wearer to retain his or her beauty with out having to look diverse unlike when one is wearing a pair of eyeglasses.

Presently, there are some 125 million around the world using this corrective lens. Of this number, 28 to 38 million wearers are in the U.S. and an estimated 13 million are in Japan. A number of types of contact lenses are offered nowadays not only for purposes of correcting one's eyesight but also to obtain various eye appearances. These contain the disposable, colored and large contacts.

There are numerous other benefits to using the contact lenses wear today. It is a practical selection due to the fact despite the fact that a individual requirements to invest a specific amount initially, he or she can appreciate savings moving forward without having to alter lenses every single so typically.

The contacts are also versatile because you can change the color of your eyes if you want to create a new look for unique occasions or even during ordinary days as lengthy as you feel like acquiring an ego increase. Also unlike the spectacles, they are not effortlessly affected during wet weather and don't steam up throughout cold weather.

An additional excellent advantage of wearing the contact lenses wear is the wider field of vision it offers to the person. This is not feasible when one is wearing the eyeglasses which focus mostly on the frontal view and not on other perspectives. Whereas when a person has the contacts on, the lenses placed on the eye itself move with the eyeballs which means the wearer can see clearly in every perspective. These corrective lens are, in truth, also perfect for people engaged in various sorts of sports.

Additionally, the contacts are in fact treated with a specific UV coating so wearers will need not worry about damaging the natural lens of their eyes.

There are particular eye conditions as nicely that have a chance to be corrected by employing contact lenses and not by employing the eyeglasses. These contain keratoconus and aniseikonia.

Lastly, individuals don't have to expertise annoying obstructions and reflections when wearing the contact lens. They'll feel comfort and clear vision all the time as lengthy as they observe proper use and maintenance.

Treating slight Keratoconus With Intacs?

Question by Ranny: Treating slight Keratoconus With Intacs?
A few years ago I considered doing laser surgery to correct eyesight (numbers are around -4), and was diagnosed with slight Keratoconus, which is not advancing and permits soft contact lenses, but the doctors could not guarantee that a surgery will not cause long term damage with that dilemma.
I heard about the Intacs treatment, and I wish to know what the risks are, how nicely it corrects the eyesight, and if feasible - what are the "usual" costs. If you have that kind of info, or at least component, it would be very helpful.

Answer by Chris
As with any refractive surgical process, there are some risks and feasible complications. Clinical studies in the U.S. showed that infection, which is a risk with any surgical procedure, occurred in .2% Intacs procedures. This is treatable with medication, and no adverse effects usually result.

Other rare complications included: overcorrection, reduction in central corneal sensation, difficulty with night vision, undercorrection, induced astigmatism, blurry vision, double vision, corneal blood vessels, halos, glare, fluctuating distance vision and a reduction of 2 or much more lines of very best corrected vision. If the outcomes of the procedure are not satisfactory, Intacs may possibly be removed or replaced. Ask your doctor will discuss the prospective risks and advantages in detail with you.

A great alternative is also LASIK eye surgery, but both have wonderful positive aspects.

Great Luck!

Keratoconus – What to do when you are diagnosed

Article by John D Andrews

Keratoconus can start in teenagers, young adults and people who regularly 'rub' their eyes. Specialist diagnostic equipment like a corneal topographer (an instrument that measures corneal shape and contour) not normally discovered in your local or high street optometrist are required to pick up the symptoms for keratoconus in these early stages.

Most people have by no means heard of 'keratoconus', nonetheless it is an eye disease that is a lot more common than you would imagine. The official estimate is that about 1 in 2,000 men and women suffer from the illness but in fact the figure is much more likely to be closer to 1 in 500.

Keratoconus outcomes in an irregular corneal surface that causes the patient blurred, double vision and image distortion caused by the the refraction of light by means of the irregular cornea.

In the early stages of keratoconus diagnosis is hard as the symptoms are similar to other eye conditions. It can commence in teenagers, young adults and individuals who regularly 'rub' their eyes. Specialist diagnostic equipment like a corneal topographer (an instrument that measures corneal shape and contour) not normally found in your local or high street optometrist are necessary to pick up the symptoms for keratoconus in these early stages.

1. Eye prescriptions turn into unstable and changing due to the changing shape of the cornea2. There is a blurring and distortion of vision3. Significant progression of astigmatism4. Sudden decrease in vision caused by corneal swelling5. Glare6. Irritation of the eyes causing much more eye rubbing7. Light sensitivity

It is critical to get a right diagnosis as soon as achievable so that ALL possibilities for treatment can be regarded as seriously.

The typical patient journey once keratoconus has been identified is

1. Monitoring of the illness with the optician and modifications to contact lens or glasses prescription.2. As the illness progresses, hard, toric lenses and referral to the NHS ophthalmologist for further monitoring.3. If the illness continues to progress further, consideration for corneal graft in conjunction with NHS.

What to do when YOU are diagnosed with Keratoconus

Right now, no one ought to have to obtain a corneal graft as a consequence of keratoconus, if it is diagnosed and treated early enough, as there are now established remedies accessible that have been used in Europe for the past 10 years or more. Whilst the lengthy term stabilty of these remedies can not be proven but, the past ten years has shown that these treatments do maintain the cornea stable for a least ten years.

The 1st factor to do when you have been diagnosed with keratoconus is to read up about it.

You should find info on the following remedies:

1. Intacs for keratoconus2. Corneal Collagen Cross-linking3. Topography Guided Custom Ablation with Corneal Collagen Cross-linking

The very first treatment, Corneal Collagen Cross-linking has been successfully utilized in Europe for the past ten years. It 'fixes' the eye by inducing a rapid 'cross-linking' of collagen fibres thereby strengthening the structure of the cornea and stopping it from weakening further.

The second treatment, Topography Guided Custom Ablation with Corneal Collagen Cross-linking is a specialist treatment undertaken by just a few clinics in the world.

Topography Guided Custom Ablation uses a extremely refined excimer laser to minimize the steepness of the keratoconus bulge on the surface of the eye and thereby reverse the loss of acuity of vision for the patient. When this has been carried out the cornea is 'fixed' in its new position with Corneal Collagen Cross-linking.

If you have been diagnosed with keratoconus you and your parents and guardians (if you are a teenager) have to take control of the treatments that are becoming provided.

Optometrists and Ophthalmologists will not necessarily give you the alternative to stabilise the cornea via Corneal Collagen Cross-linking. It is up to you to investigate these alternatives before your vision deteriorates to the extent that you only option is a corneal graft.

For far more info you can go to http://www.accuvision.co.uk a clinic that are able to give both advanced remedies for keratoconus in the UK.

The most promising technology for treating Keratoconus known as collagen cross linking (CXL) with UVA is currently becoming introduced into the United States under experimental protocols in Clinical Trials. This treatment, which has been employed in Europe for eight years, now is undergoing Phase 1 FDA clinical trials in the United States. It has been demonstrated to be secure and powerful if performed, with the epithelium removed, and has the possible to quit the progression of Keratoconus. This treatment is advised for individuals with progressive Keratoconus or Ectasia following LASIK to stabilize the cornea. It can be performed with our without having INTACS. Even although enrollment for this process for the FDA trials is closed, our center is 1 of the only centers in the United States that has received and IDE (Investigational Device Exemption) from the FDA to treat patients with this procedure and we are currently enrolling patients under an Investigational protocol. This protocol makes it possible for us to enroll patients for the next 5 years and can be viewed on the government web site -- www.clinicaltrials.gov. Because this treatment is still regarded as experimental in the United States it need to only be done with Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, so that patients can adequately be protected. The process, which is painless, is as follows. The top layer of the cornea is removed under local anesthesia. Vitamin drops are soaked into the cornea until they penetrate the whole ...

Grewal Eye Institute First to Offer C3R Crosslinking Treatment in the Entire Indian Sub-continent

Grewal Eye Institute First to Provide C3R Crosslinking Treatment in the Entire Indian Sub-continent

Chandigarh (PRWEB) October 1, 2006

Grewal Eye Institute (GEI), the premier comprehensive Eye Care Institute based at Chandigarh, has achieved a new high in bringing the most recent technological advancement in the field of eye care, by becoming the initial and the only institute, not only in India, but in the entire Indian Sub-Continent to offer the revolutionary ‘Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin’ (C3R) Treatment to the masses.

The C3R process, the only known treatment that has lately been proven to permanently halt the progression of the dreaded Keratoconus disease, was commercially launched globally in the second week of this month itself. By procuring this when-in-a-decade technological break-via in much less than two weeks of its launch, GEI is now 1 of the few eye institutes in the world and the only in Indian subcontinent, to give comprehensive treatment now accessible for this previously untreatable disease. This was announced here right now by Dr. SPS Grewal, CEO, GEI.

The C3R Treatment is a ray of hope for lacs of Indian Keratoconus Patients, who, just before the launch of this advanced process, had been resigned to the vagaries of fate. This is simply because Keratoconus is amongst the most dreaded of eye diseases, as in most of the instances, the illness progresses relentlessly in the course of the young age, does not have any acute symptoms initially and thus is usually not detected in the early stages. In the advanced stages, the only treatment choices accessible earlier were surgical insertion of ‘Intacs’ or a ‘Corneal Transplant’, both of which have limited success on numerous grounds, like trauma to the eye, quite a few precautions needed post-surgery and a long recovery period etc. Most importantly, from both the doctors’ & patients’ perspective, neither of the operations guaranteed a stoppage of the illness. There was always the possibility of setting in of Keratoconus again, even soon after the operation. This produced the scenario a frustrating 1 for both the patient and the doctor.

Speaking at the press conference Dr S.P.S. Grewal, (CEO), GEI said, “C3R is a non-surgical process. Also it is the only identified process that is proven to halt the progression of the dreaded Keratoconus. This treatment now provides an end to a lifetime of waiting and uncertainty for Keratoconus patients. This is a straightforward one-time treatment that offers a permanent solution to Keratoconus. It does not require heavy precautions or standard follow-up visits, does not require an eye donor as necessary in ‘Corneal Transplant’, does not require any stitches or incision in the eye, takes just around one hour and the patient recovery is quick. This procedure is a boon for patients with keratoconus”.

Keratoconus weakens the cornea of the eye causing the eye to bulge outwards and producing moderate to severe blurriness of vision. In the C3R process, the eye is impregnated with a riboflavin remedy and exposed to ultra-high frequency light. C3R causes the collagen fibrils to thicken, stiffen, and crosslink & re-attach to each other, creating the cornea stronger and a lot more stable therefore convincingly halting the progression of the illness. This approach can also be utilized in corneal ulcers and before LASIK treatment in high Myopes to decrease the risk of postoperative Keratectasia.

Like all remedies, this process is most beneficial when performed at the earliest feasible stage of Keratoconus when the visual and mechanical damage to the cornea is minimal. This is where the role of contemporary topography devices such as the Pentacam lies. The Pentacam helps to detect Keratoconus much prior to it can be detected in a clinical examination and ensures that the illness is permanently halted by C3R before any serious damage to the eye.

The C3R process was launched internationally at the 24th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) held at London from September 9-13, 2006 where Dr SPS Grewal and team presented their research work on Pentacam.

Speaking at the press conference DR SPS Grewal said, “It is always our endeavour to bring the best, safest and the latest technologies & advancements in the field of eye care to patients in our region. We are quite happy to be the first and only institute in the Indian Sub-Continent to offer the C3R procedure. For the field of Opthhalmology the treatment of Keratoconus is as considerable as bypass surgery or angioplasty in cardiology.” ***

Keratoconus is a degenerative non-inflammatory disorder of the eye in which structural adjustments inside the cornea cause it to thin and change to a far more conical shape than its typical gradual curve. Keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision, with numerous images, streaking and sensitivity to light all often reported by the patient. Though regularly thought of as a rare condition, Keratoconus is the most common dystrophy of the cornea, affecting around one person in a thousand. It is typically diagnosed in the patient’s adolescent years and attains its most severe state in the twenties and thirties. The course of its progression following diagnosis is unpredictable. If in both eyes, the deterioration in vision linked with the disease can affect the person’s ability to drive a car or read normal print. Over 90% of patients have involvement of both eyes, though it is not unusual for there to be asymmetric modifications, with 1 eye becoming much more involved than the other.

The abnormal curvature of the cornea due to Keratoconus adjustments the cornea’s refractive error producing moderate to severe blurriness of vision. Keratoconus is an irregular protrusion of the cornea, the clear surface over the colored part of the eye. It is comparable, structurally, to the crystal of a watch. If this crystal or windowpane is not smooth, the light will not bend evenly and an irregular image will be formed, like searching by means of a bumpy piece of glass.

Adavantages of C3R:

Basic one time treatment

No periodic treatments needed

Halts the progress and causes some regression

It is permanent

No handling of lenses every day

Does not will need any eye donation

No precaution

No injection

No stitches as in Keratoplasty

No incisions as in Intacs

Treatments for Keratoconus

Post by Beulah

Individuals who got the eye disease of Keratoconus in the past means the vision is deteriorated progressively by Keratoconus and there is little hope for their eyesight. So it was a huge strike for individuals when they get diagnosis of Keratoconus. Nonetheless, with the rapid development of new vision technologies, it is lucky for folks diagnosed of Keraroconus that they still have hope in their poor vision, and even for men and women who lost sight, the sight still has the opportunity to be regained. The following will introduce some treatments for Keratoconus to help individuals to get far more understanding of it.

In the past, when new vision technologies have not been developed or mature, hard contact lens or corneal transplant is utilised to treat Keratoconus. But they don't work nicely. They are invasive, more essential, they are normally uncomfortable and even painful. And what kind of treatments has so considerably magic power that can treat this serious eye illness? The following will introduce two kinds of efficient remedies: INTACS and C3-R? the invention of which attract great attentions in the world of vision remedies INTACS is a process that reshapes the cornea by putting a little plastic insert in the cornea. By this way, clearer vision can be realized and the vision can be improved. You could feel it must be extremely tough and want to take a lengthy time to make it. Definitely not! It is just a ten-minute procedure. Yet another big problem men and women might concern is if it is painful. You can rest assured that it is painless. When you want, you can pick to remove the INTACTS. What is strange is that you don't even can feel it.

C3-R is also not as challenging as what we thought. It is just a simple process to treat Keratoconus, which only wants 30 minutes. This treatment is reached by a set of drops and UV lights. A set of drops will be put in the eyes to strengthen the cornea, and UV lights are added to activate the medication throughout the treatment. It is magic that only 30-minute UV lights can increase patient's vision for more than 2-three months.

People can also decide on to use the combination of INTACS and C3-R according to the feature and severity of your eye issue and your eye doctor's suggestions. For the treatments of Keratoconus, we are confident with the rapid and progressive development of new vision technologies, there will be greater treatment for it in the future.

Keratoconus and C3R - A Couple of Details

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a degenerative non-inflammatory disorder of the eye in which structural modifications inside the cornea trigger it to thin and change to a a lot more conical shape than its typical gradual curve. Keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision, with several images, streaking and sensitivity to light all usually reported by the patient. It is usually diagnosed in the patient's adolescent years and attains its most severe state in the twenties and thirties. The course of its progression following diagnosis is unpredictable. If in both eyes, the deterioration in vision linked with the illness can impact the person's capacity to drive a car or read typical print. Over 90% of patients have involvement of both eyes, although it is not unusual for there to be asymmetric changes, with 1 eye being a lot more involved than the other.

The abnormal curvature of the cornea due to Keratoconus modifications the cornea's refractive error producing moderate to severe blurriness of vision. Keratoconus is an irregular protrusion of the cornea, the clear surface over the colored part of the eye. It is comparable, structurally, to the crystal of a watch. If this crystal or windowpane is not smooth, the light will not bend evenly and an irregular image will be formed, like searching through a bumpy piece of glass.

Diagnosis of Keratoconus

The only clue to a Keratoconus diagnosis could be from corneal measurements or a corneal topography map. A topographical map of the cornea will show the high and low spots on the cornea, much like a topographical map of the earth will show the mountains and oceans. This is where the role of modern topography devices like the Pentacam lies. The Pentacam helps to detect Keratoconus considerably just before it can be detected in a clinical examination.

'Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin' (C3R)

The most recent revolutionary Keratoconus treatment is C3R (Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin) that has been proven to strengthen the weak corneal structure. This strategy works by increasing collagen crosslinking, which are the natural "anchors" inside the cornea. These anchors are responsible for preventing the cornea from bulging out and becoming steep and irregular, consequence of advanced Keratoconus. C3R causes the collagen fibrils to thicken, stiffen, and crosslink & reattach to each and every other, making the cornea stronger and far more stable thus provenly halting the progression of the disease. This method can also be utilized in corneal ulcers and before LASIK treatment in high Myopes to minimize the risk of postoperative Keratectasia.

The Procedure

The C3R treatment is performed in just 30 minutes. In the course of the treatment, custom-produced riboflavin eye drops are applied to the cornea, which is then activated by ultraviolet light. This amazingly easy method has been shown in laboratory and clinical studies to increase the amount of collagen cross-linking in the cornea and strengthen the cornea.

The Advantages of C3R over other remedies

Contact Lenses - RGP Contact Lenses

In mild or early stages, eyeglasses or typical contact lenses could right the astigmatic vision. Contact lenses in Keratoconus are not straightforward to fit, generally not quite comfy. They will need constant maintenance and frequent follow ups with the physician. As Keratoconus advances, rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses possibly the only non-surgical way to obtain clear vision. But contact lens fitting of a patient with Keratoconus demands much care and frequent check-ups, because the condition can worsen. Most importantly, they do not arrest the progress of disease. Also there can be scarring as a result of contact lens wear causes troubles of its own.

Intacs

A recent surgical option to corneal transplant is the insertion of intrastromal corneal ring segments. A small incision is produced in the periphery of the cornea and two thin arcs of polymethyl methacrylate slid between the layers of the corneal stroma on either side of the pupil, the incision then becoming closed. The segments push out against the curvature of the cornea, flattening the peak of the cone and returning it to a more natural shape. Even so intacs do not inherently alter the biomechanical structural integrity of the cornea and thus may not be a permanent remedy. If the refraction adjustments over a period of time right after inserting the intacs rings they would want to be removed. Another advantage of C3R over Intacs is that C3R does not involve any incisions as in Intacs.

Corneal Transplant

A corneal transplant may be needed when vision can't be corrected satisfactorily making use of other procedures such as contact lenses and glasses, or if painful swelling can't be relieved by medications. A corneal transplant, also known as a corneal graft, or as a penetrating Keratoplasty, involves the removal of the central portion referred to as a button of the diseased cornea and replacing it with clear healthy donor button. The donor cornea button is sewed into the defect created by removal of the diseased cornea. But a corneal transplant is dependent on eye donation and needs a long healing period. The recovery of vision might not be quite very good. Lengthy term studies show that Keratoconus can recur even following Keratoplasty.

Adavantages of C3R

Simple one time treatmentNo periodic treatments requiredHalts the progress and causes some regressionIt is permanentNo handling of lenses every dayDoes not want any eye donationNo precautionNo injectionNo stitches as in KeratoplastyNo incisions as in IntacsQuick recovery, short follow up.
